Question   Paper

Q.   How   do   Steinbeck’s   references   to   and   variations   on   Biblical   characters   and   stories   affect   the   reader’s   experience/understanding   of   the   novel?

A.   Steinbeck’s   references   to   Biblical   characters   and   stories   influence   the   reader’s   idea   and   image   of   the   scene   in   the   novel.   For   example,   Jim   Casy   is   a   Christ-Like   figure   in   the   novel,   so   most   of   the   readers   will   put   their   reputations   of   Jesus,   a   religious   leader   with   beard   and   have   many   disciples,   onto   Casy,   which   gives   the   readers   an   idea   of   what   characteristics   Jim   Casy   may   or   may   not   have.   Well,   why   didn’t   Steinbeck   use   another   story   then?   Why   does   it   have   to   be   referred   from   the   Holy   Bible,   instead   of   teenagers’   favorite   novels?   Well,   the   Holy   Bible   is   certainly   the   most   famous   book   in   the   world   with   hundreds   of   different   language,   and   it   can   definitely   make   clearer   sense   and   meaning   than   any   other   “best-seller   books”.   OK   then,   how   would   it   gain   experience   and   understanding   of   the   novel   for   the   readers?   The   readers   already   knew   the   Bible   stories   so   well   that   they   couldn’t   possibly   learn   anything   new,   right?   The   part   about   knowing   the   Bible   stories   well   is   right.   The   part   about   they   couldn’t   learn   new   stuff   from   Steinbeck’s   book   is   not   right.   Steinbeck   used   different   perspectives   of   the   not-exactly-same   pattern   of   the   stories   in   the   Bible.   Although   the   biblical   characters   and   scenes   may   be   similar   to   the   Bible   stories,   they   may   be   different,   too.   For   instance,   even   though   the   action   of   Uncle   John   sending   Rose   of   Sharon’s   baby   down   the   river   sounds   alike   to   Moses   in   the   Bible   being   sent   down   the   river,   two   actions   represent,   in   fact,   the   opposite   meanings.     Rose   of   Sharon’s   baby   represents   many   of   the   migrants’   miserable   lives.   On   the   other   hand,   Moses   represents   the   chance   of   living   and   a   new   future   life.   Steinbeck   varied   the   Biblical   characters   through   his   writing.   His   charterers   gave   these   similar   yet   totally   different   comparisons   to   provide   a   new   idea   of   the   spirituality   of   Christianity   to   his   readers.
